"Who is the person who desires life, and loves days of seeing goodness? Guard your tongue from negating life, and your lips from speaking deceitfully. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it." Tehillim/Psalm 34:13-15

King David is teaching us to put into practice what science is proving today: that our thoughts and feelings directly impact our environment and create what we experience as reality. Speech follows thought. If language is an expression of consciousness, then it is incumbent on each of us to know ourselves, to seek the good points in all people and circumstances, and to refrain from gossip and speaking ill of others. In this way we can strive to counter the negative inclination and transform our lives. This is the practice of actively seeking peace.

Words have the power to affirm and uplift life — and the power to destroy. This month let us use the vehicle of language kindly — to heal and to uplift, to unite and to build. Each of us can be peace-makers, and the world is asking this of us now. Take the time each morning to pray to overcome negative thoughts and speech, not to judge and to cultivate empathy. This victory will bring you life in the fullest sense of the word.
